Thermocouple Wire Type J Fe-CuNi Stable And Accurate In Both Oxidizing And Reducing Environments
The Fe-CuNi Type J thermocouple consists of an iron (Fe) positive leg and a copper-nickel (CuNi) negative leg, also known as Constantan. It operates within a temperature range of -210°C to +760°C (-346°F to +1400°F), making it suitable for various industrial applications. Type J thermocouples are known for their moderate EMF output of about 55 µV/°C, offering reliable temperature measurements.
These thermocouples excel in oxidizing and reducing environments and are often used in heat treatment processes, furnaces, and general industrial temperature monitoring. Their performance is stable in vacuum or controlled environments, but they are not ideal for wet or high-humidity conditions, as the iron leg can rust and degrade over time.
While cost-effective, the Type J is limited by its susceptibility to corrosion and oxidation, particularly at temperatures above 760°C. Thus, it’s best suited for low to medium-temperature environments.

Positive Leg: Iron (Fe)
Negative Leg: Copper-Nickel (CuNi), also known as Constantan.
-40°C to +750°C (-40°F to +1382°F).
Moderate sensitivity, with an EMF output of approximately 69 µV/°C.
Suitable for use in reducing or vacuum environments but prone to oxidation in higher temperatures with oxygen exposure.
Reliable for moderate temperatures but less stable at higher temperatures compared to other thermocouples like Type K.
Affordable and widely used in industrial and general-purpose applications.
Fe-CuNi Type J Thermocouple Wire Applications
Type J thermocouples, with their composition of Iron (Fe) as the positive leg and Copper-Nickel (CuNi) as the negative leg, are suitable for various industrial and scientific applications, especially in moderate temperature ranges. Here are some key applications:
Commonly used in industrial furnaces and kilns to measure and control the temperature, especially at temperatures up to 750°C (1382°F).
Used in ovens and heat treatment processes where moderate temperatures need to be accurately monitored.
Ideal for applications like boilers, heat exchangers, and other processes requiring precise temperature control.
Type J thermocouples are particularly useful in environments with low oxygen or in vacuum conditions, where they exhibit stability and reliability.
Although limited in high-temperature ranges, Type J thermocouples can be used in cryogenic environments and cold storage systems for low-temperature measurements.
Used in automotive and aerospace industries for temperature monitoring during testing and development processes.
